Vertigo Causing Your World to Spin

What is Vertigo?

Vertigo is the sensation of feeling dizzy, motion or spinning. Peripheral vertigo is due to a problem within the inner ear and how the brain processes this information to control balance. These areas are the vestibular labyrinth and semicircular canals. People who have issues with vertigo often describe it as the world or they are spinning.

Symptoms of Vertigo

  • Dizziness

  • Motion sickness

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Loss of balance

  • Problem with focusing the eyes

  • Double vision

  • Eye movement issues

  • Hearing loss

  • Tinnitus

  • Headaches

Cranial Nerve 8: VestibuloCochlear Nerve

Cranial Nerve VIII is known as the vestibularcochlear nerve. This is further broken into a Vestibular division and Cochlear division. The Vestibular division is related to a sense of position which is our treatment focus with vertigo. While the cochlear division is related to sound.

Inside the ear we have semicircular canals which contain little hairs. When these hairs get stimulated by the movement of lymph, this gives us the proper orientation of where we are in space.

Vestibulo-Ocular Reflex

The Vestibulo-Ocular Reflex (VOR) is an automatic reflex used to help keep the eyes focused on an object while the head moves. This result is the eye muscles cause the eyes to move in the opposite direction of your head to keep your field of vision stable. For example, if you turn your head right, the eye muscles cause the eyes to rotate left.

This reflex is crucial for balance and stability while moving.

Signs & Symptoms of issues with the Vestibulo-Ocular Reflex:

  • Difficult to read signs or recognize faces

  • Dizzy and motion-sickness

  • Vertigo

  • Balance issues and risk of falling

Client Vertigo Case

Recently had a client come in experiencing and seeking treatment for vertigo. She noticed it most while doing yoga and moving from a laying down position to sitting up and sitting up to laying down. This was happening 1-2x a week.

We treated any issues we found with the VestibuloCochlear and then followed it up with treatment of the Vestibulo-Ocular Reflex and she has been symptom free since our last treatment.
